University Commercialization

The commercial development of inventions developed by universities presents a number of unique legal issues, from the initial negotiations of the license with the university’s intellectual property development arm, to the special matters that may arise concerning the employment of professors and university students.  The SLG team has counseled numerous companies utilizing and commercializing university intellectual property from such institutions as the Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgia State University, the State University of North Carolina, Stanford University, and the California Institute of Technology.  We have deep experience not only in the initial structuring of these businesses, but also in the numerous issues that arise in doing financing transactions and mergers and acquisitions.
